St Bart's Penn children case study

Context and background

St Bart’s is located at the heart of the Penn community, in Wolverhampton, West Midlands. There has been a church present at the site since the signing of the Magna Carta. St Annes is the sister church of St Bart’s and was founded in 1888.

What is working well with children and families?

They have two distinct choirs that lead their worship to God.

  • The Sunday Morning ‘Hoodie’ Choir -a little more informal and ideal for both children and adults who love to sing.
  • The Sunday Evening Choir - singing more traditional music including Choral Evensong including children and adults who would like to challenge their voices.

The choirs are an excellent way of engaging with children and families in the local community. The ‘Hoodiechoir’ meet after school mid-week to gather and practice, and the evening choir rehearse on Friday evenings. Both Choirs meet individually to sing with commitment and passion. Each choir has a unique flavour to offer in their worship, but they unite with one common aim, to "Sing with One Voice to worship God".

In addition, St Bart’s have a successful junior church running on a Sunday morning with about 20 children, run by volunteers.

What have you learned?

  • Most people enjoy singing, it is a great tool to engage with people of all ages.
  • Have courage to dream bravely.
