Anticipating Advent
The annual Nordkirche Partnership Celebration - this year in Schwerin, Mecklenburg
Thursday, 30 November to Monday, 4 December.
The Programme will include:
- A facilitated discussion on ‘what connects and what separates’ at a former East German border museum,
- A visit to Ratzeburg’s theological seminary and Hagenow’s synagogue,
- A presentation on ‘Christianity during the National Socialist era’ at a historical centre,
- A visit to Schwerin Castle and a local parish having ecumenical and refugee work,
- Our special Partnership Service in Schwerin Cathedral,
- Sunday worship in the cathedral,
- A visit with local learners of English,
- Free time at the Christmas market.
Accommodation:
Provisional reservations have been made at ‘Haus am Pfaffenteich’, a family-run guest house in the heart of the city. Nightly room rates are, €70 - €75 (double) and €50 - €55 (single). Some private hosting may be possible for those preferring such.
Suggested Travel:
Manchester airport tends to have by far the cheapest and best connections with easyJet, but KLM has a route from Birmingham.
- Outbound - EasyJet (Manchester 13h55 - Hamburg 16h35). Currently available at £45.
- Homebound - EasyJet (Hamburg 10h10 – Manchester 10h55). Currently available at £75.
This homebound suggestion would probably mean taking Monday’s 07h20 train from Schwerin if travelling with hand luggage only. However, with hold luggage to check in, a Sunday afternoon train with an overnight stay in Hamburg would be needed. The whole journey is possible by train, but at a cost of about £200 and with a duration of no less than 13 hours each way (from Birmingham, New Street).
