Young people have a strong sense of right and wrong, this, coupled to a desire to make the world a better place can make them a powerful force for change. We have gathered a small selection of resources to help 11-18s explore issues of social justice.
Climate Change - Baked Alaska
Riding Lights Theatre Company produced Baked Alaska, a piece of theatre weaving 4 stories linked on climate change, asking us to consider what we will do in response. The performance was filmed and split into 7 short clips that come with accompanying questions.
Global Poverty - Slum Survivor
"Around 1 billion people thats about one sixth of the worlds population live in slums. Life in townships, favelas and temporary settlements across the world is hard." Slum survivor is a simulated experience for 13-18s to experience life in a slum. It allows young people to choose to live as many spend their entire lives with a limited diet and resources. It:
- raises awareness among young people and the wider community, helping them discover some of God's heart for the poor, and
- helps young people raise money for organisations whose work is to help communities to alleviate this poverty.
You can find out more at the Slum Survivor website here.
The average household owes over 7000 in unsecured debt. Many people in the UK are controlled by their money, rather than being in control of it. CS:CS run train the trainer events on how to budget, which then enables those people to train their churches and young people to get in control of their finances.
You can explore more about training to become a trainer for Cash Smart:Credit Savvy here, or email James Henderson who works for Transforming Communities Together.
Why not ask your 11-18s about the issues they care about. You can find resources on various themes for different ages by exploring websites such as:
