Cathedral appoints new Canon Chancellor

The Bishop of Lichfield, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Michael Ipgrave OBE, in consultation with the Cathedral Chapter, has appointed the Rev. Dr. Gregory Platten as the new Canon Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral.

Gregory is currently vicar of All Saints’ Friern Barnet and Area Dean of Central and West Barnet Deaneries in the Diocese of London. Ordained Priest in 2004, Dr. Platten served a curacy at St. John’s Wood and in 2007 become chaplain of Lincoln College, Oxford and Assistant Priest at St. Michael at the North Gate in Oxford City Centre. He is an Oxford Theology graduate and prepared for the ministry at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. His doctoral research was in the area of philosophical theology and Russian orthodoxy. Married to Gillian, the Plattens have two sons ages nine and six. Gregory will be installed and collated as Canon Residentiary (Canon Chancellor) on the 5th July at Cathedral Evensong.

The Dean of Lichfield, the Very Reverend Adrian Dorber, said, “We’re delighted to welcome Gregory to Lichfield. He is an extremely talented, experienced and able priest, with real gifts in helping congregations to grow and churches to be fully alert to the opportunities to serve their communities. A gifted teacher and Christian communicator, we have every confidence that he will be able to further the Cathedral’s outreach and educational work. I really look forward to working with him.
