Bishop Michael gave this brief tribute about the Revd Preb John Baines RIP:
“I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death last Friday of The Revd Preb John Baines, Vicar of Longnor, Quarnford, Sheen and Warslow with Elkstone, and Rural Dean of Alstonefield.
I most recently met with Fr John when he provided abundant hospitality at his home for me and my companions on my pilgrimage around the diocese. The warmth of welcome in his Staffordshire moorlands parishes and the memories of his congenial conversation, attentive care and prayerful faith are very fresh in my mind. He will be a loss to the communities which he served and to the many colleagues with whom he shared his wisdom and encouragement; Bishop Matthew , Archdeacon Megan and I join them in sharing our heartfelt sorrow.
The depth of his priesthood and his example as a pastor will also be a loss to our future clergy as he was due to lead our diocesan Ordination Retreat this summer and to preach at the Petertide ordination of deacons. I know that he would have shared much practical wisdom and guidance from his years of faithful ministry.
He was remembered this Sunday in our cathedral. Please join me in praying for him, for his parishes and deanery, and for the many people who loved him and miss him now. In the joy of this continuing Easter season, our sorrow is underlaid by the sure promise and hope of resurrection.”
