Training Incumbent
The Revd Malcolm Mycock
Trained: Wycliffe Hall Oxford. Deaconed: 2017, Lichfield
I was born in Leek, a market town in the Staffordshire Moorlands eight miles down the road from Bucknall. I am married to Tina and have two children, George 29 who is a phd student at Worcester University and Maddy who runs a small beauty business and still lives at home.
I have a passion for evangelism, I feel called to estate ministry, I am involved in ministry with people in addiction; I am came to faith through a 12 step programme in my recovery from alcohol addiction. I ride motorbikes and am a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association and on the leadership of the national Bikers Church - we hold a monthly bikers church service at St Johns. I believe all people need to hear the Good News of Jesus, I never tire of seeing lives transformed through faith in Jesus.
I am not in favour of the PLF.
The context
Bucknall is a wonderful training parish. We have three churches, St Marys being the Mother church, and two estate churches planted in the 1950's from St Marys: St John's in Abbey Hulton and St Stephens in Bentilee.
Bucknall is a large parish and with over a tenth of the city living in it, aprox 29,000 people. It is a very deprived area: there is a high level of need, poverty, addiction and social problems, but the people are so friendly and there is a real sense of community on the estates. What is wonderful is the peoples' openness to faith. People are interested in Jesus and listening to what He offers.
We have good relationships with our local primary schools and lead assemblies in each and invite the schools to church through the year.
Outreach is important in our parish and this happens in a number of ways, from door to door, work in schools, running addiction groups, weekly clubs including craft, youth and Christmas tree festivals and taking Santa round the estate handing out selection boxes and gospels and mens and ladies breakfasts.
We are also involved in city wide ministry with our youth and have good links with other churches including both CofE and other denominations.
I came to Bucknall as a curate and have stayed eventually becoming team vicar, and I can personally say I have experienced and learnt so much in my eight years.
The parishes take a traditional/orthodox stance on PLF.
